Fairy Tail is a popular manga series that started in August 2006 selling over 60 million copies, an anime video game adaptation developed by Atelier studio Gust. The game takes place in a fantasy world of Fiore, where wizards join guilds to earn fame and fortune!
The video game is a fantasy adventure about a Dragon Slayer Natsu of the rowdy Fairy Tail guild and his friends taking on foes from the top guilds of Earth Land including Dragon Slayers, shape shifters, summoners, enchanters and other mages. The game follows the event of the 13th story arc from the manga, beginning with the Fairy Tail guild running the Grand Magic Games tournament. The game features all the characters you would expect to see, characters like Lucy Heartfilia, Erza Scarlet and Wendy Marvell all make an appearance.
At Remoteplay we were fortunate enough to be invited by Koei Tecmo Europe to get our hand on the demo of the game.
The graphics are cell shaded and are a faithful representation of the anime which runs impressively on the PS4. Fairy Tail is a party based RPG with turn and grid combat, giving newbies and seasoned fans both the depth and accessibility. Combat consist of weapon and magic attacks, where each attack affects one or more adjacent square depending on what attack has been selected, this encouraged me to try different attacks depending up on the situation.
As you complete missions and win battles you earn money to upgrade your guild, which will open up shops and attract new characters. The game will allow you to form your own team from over 10 playable characters from the manga series.
In the game, players will choose missions from a quest board along side story missions. In the demo we controlled Natsu, Erza and Lucy as they trained and levelled up before the Grand Magic Games. Levelling up consists of both levels as well as ranks which unlocks new abilities. During the demo we run into Jellal and Ultear. Jellal and Ultear helped power our characters up and let us test the new found group power known as an ‘Awakening’ feature.
It will be interesting to see how the final game will play out, from what we saw so far we are looking forward to its release.
The game is due out on 19th March 2020 on the PS4, Switch and PC. It comes with two editions standard and deluxe. The deluxe edition comes with:
- Costume set: Great Magic Games team costumes
- Bonus Lacrima set
- DDX limited costume: Ryza costume for Lucy
