Katamari Damacy Reroll Bowls us Over – Preview

We go now to a world of dancing pandas, giraffes and ducks, a land of rainbow framed mountains and jubilant chorus, all ruled by the spandex squeezed King of All Cosmos- it can only be Katamari Damacy. Famously flamboyant, Katamari Damacy Reroll is set to bowl the world over once more with a vivid HD overhaul, and from what we played at the Bandai Namco event, its an addictive, steamrolling parade of colour that’ll have you humming the theme long after you’ve put the game down.

The world of Katamari fits the Switch like a glove; as the little Prince of all cosmos you roll impossibly adhesive orbs called Katamari, slowly collecting things that stick, growing larger and larger until you transcend from thumbtacks and paperclips to skyscrapers and monuments. It’s kooky, it’s wacky and it’s very addictive. Charged by your father to build stars from these katamaris after his own drunken night of wanton destruction, you repopulate the sky with stars born from leftover sweets, bric-a-brac and the occasional city. There’s an artistry to rolling the perfect katamari. What objects do you go for? How quickly and how smoothly can you do so? Under a time limit, our petite prince gathers a conglomerate lump to transform into a new world, but controlling how he does so is the challenge.

The controls of the puzzle-action game are the meat of your actions, pulling off sharp turns and quick, 180 degree turnarounds are how you save time and stop your omnivorous orb from crashing and losing mass. Blindly dashing can only get you so far, so Prince Jump and Prince Scout are skills that allow you to deftly survey the nearby area, able to plan and pave your path to a perfect score. Within the Switch version of Katamari Damacy Reroll, HD Rumble, Gyro Controls and local multiplayer battles through a shared joy-con are all available, cementing Katamari’s presence on the portable/home console hybrid. It took a while, but Katamari’s debut on a Nintendo Console makes a whole cosmos of sense, we can’t wait to see more of the title at the end of the year.

Katamari Damacy Reroll will be available on Switch and PC December 7th.
